Kam Buckner was first elected to the Illinois House in 2018 and is currently an assistant majority leader. The Democrat from was first elected to the Illinois House in 2018 and is currently an assistant majority leader. A Democrat, Buckner represents a district that contains portions of the Southside, Northside, and Downtown Chicago. He is the former chair of the Illinois House Legislative Black Caucus and currently is vice chair of the Appropriations – General Services Committee, and serves on the Civil & Criminal Judiciary, Executive, and Revenue committees. Buckner was raised on the Southside of Chicago and graduated from Morgan Park High School and from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where he played for the Illinois Fighting Illini football team. Buckner holds a law degree from DePaul University College of Law. Buckner formerly worked for U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans, and in the front office of the Chicago Cubs. He spent for years as executive director of World Sport Chicago, a nonprofit that grew from the Chicago bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Chicago State University. He has been published in the Chicago Tribune, Politico, The Hill, and Crain’s Chicago Business, and he has taught public policy at the University of Chicago.
